TEXT:
Habakkuk 2:18-19
18:
“Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot
speak.
19:
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’ Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’
Can it give guidance? It is covered with gold and silver; there is no breath in
it.”
(New International Version Holy
Bible)
TOPIC:
LIFE FROM LIFELESSNESS
The
religions of the Ancient Near East were annoyingly interesting. This is because
it was expected that people would venerate a deity that supported and provided
for them, the opposite was true.
Today's
passage shows the folly of trusting in an idol - it is carved by man and cannot
speak. But just as you imagine how foolish trusting in a lifeless idol is,
there are many people today who depend on such.
For
example, some ladies today consult sorcerers for charms to attract the love of
their husbands or lovers. Many don't see anything wrong with that. They say,
"Well, this lady just wants to protect her home or love!"
A
sorcerer is only interested in your money. As it was with the gods in Ancient
Near Eastern - religions, so it is with the idol worshippers of our time.
Bongos
Ikwue, in a famous song said, "Show me a virgin in a maternity ward; show
me sunrise that starts from the West." As impossible as these are, so it
is that life cannot emerge from a lifeless deity.
QUESTION:
What idol do you worship?
PRAYER:
The temptation to look up to something other than You is very real, O Lord. Help
me to always depend on You, in Jesus name. Amen.
Remain
Blessed
