TEXT: JAMES 1:19-25
TOPIC: A GENERATION OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
JAMES 1:19-25 NIV
19: My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this:
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20: because human anger does not produce the
righteousness that God desires.
21: Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the
evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can
save you.
22: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive
yourselves. Do what it says.
23: Anyone who listens to the word but does not do
what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror
24: and, after looking at himself, goes away and
immediately forgets what he looks like.
25: But whoever looks intently into the perfect law
that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard,
but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
A GENERATION OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
We are living in an era of information overload. The
constant influx of information from the media space can be overwhelming,
resulting in stress, anxiety and decreased productivity.
It appears that the more information we acquire, the
less we act on it, particularly information we acquire from the word of God,
the Bible.
James admonishes us to be doers of the word, and not
hearers only. James is warning Christians about the dangers of always hearing
and accessing information about God, but not doing anything about the
information we acquire.
Paul also observed that in the last days people will
be “ever learning,” and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
(2Timothy 3:7) KJV. James calls that attitude self‑deception in verse 22.
Most of the confusions in the body of Christ are
caused by the well‑informed, i.e., hearers of the word who seem to be religious
but do not bridle their tongues. Informed people are hyper critics, they
criticize everyone and everything in the church – a very sad development.
James closes his exhortation by stating that pure
Christianity before God is action, not only knowledge. He then gave an example
such as visiting the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep
oneself unspotted from the world.
QUESTION: Are you a practical Christian or a
theoretical Christian with an overload of information?
PRAYER: Dear LORD, please help me to practice what I
know and desist from destructive criticism in the body of Christ. Amen
