On the Potter’s Wheel: Devotions for Spiritual Shaping

WEDNESDAY, 20 AUGUST 2025

TEXT: John 6:25-40

TOPIC: DO NOT WORK FOR FOOD THAT SPOILS

An adage has it that “a golden fish has no hidden place.”

The series of miracles performed by Jesus made people more desperate to pursue Him wherever He went and by whatever means. However, Jesus knowing everyone’s heart, told them that the energy they were expending in pursuing Him was ill-motivated.

Jesus rebuked their purely materialistic notions of the Kingdom, as they sought a miracle worker who would merely fill their stomachs with bread.

Jesus wanted us to work for the right cause, for things that eternal value. The scripture consistently reminds us that we need more than just physical food to live; we need spiritual nourishment.

Isaiah summed it up this way; “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food” (Isaiah 55:2, ESV).

QUESTION: Does your work have eternal value?

PRAYER: Help me, dear Lord, to seek first your kingdom and your righteousness, so that all other things shall be added unto me.

Remain Blessed
