TEACHING
There are times when the
content of Christ’s teaching can only be understood by the illumination of the
Holy Spirit. The audience of Jesus, who took His metaphorical teaching as
literal drinking of blood, found it scandalous and disgusting (Leviticus 19:26).
They could not understand
that eating His flesh and drinking His blood are metaphors for believing in His
substitutionary death and resurrection. The charge of cannibalism is not new.
During the time of Nero,
who persecuted Christians, the early church was accused of practicing cannibalism
because the disciples spoke of the elements during the Holy Communion as the
flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
They did not understand
that it was a symbolic representation. Even today, non-Christians who cannot
understand the Bible because they are spiritually bereft blame Christians for
many things, such as worshiping three gods and making Jesus God.
Paul tells us that “the
god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see
the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of
God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4).
QUESTION: Are
there gray areas in the Christian beliefs that you are yet to understand?
