TEXT: Mark
6:1-5
1: Jesus left there and
went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
2: When the Sabbath came,
he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where
did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been
given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
3: Isn’t this the
carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and
Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4: Jesus said to them, “A
prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in
his own home.”
5: He could not do any
miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.

TOPIC: THE
DANGER OF OVERFAMILIARITY
The idea of being
overfamiliar with someone is not the same with being disrespectful.
Jesus visited the
community in which He grew up. There, He was known. Consequently, He did not
get the honor due Him. But He was not offended.
On the contrary, the
people were unhappy with Him because He taught with wisdom and performed
miracles!
The ministry of Christ in
His childhood community was limited by this problem of over familiarity.
As you endeavor to seek
God with all your heart, know that if you get to the point of becoming too
familiar with God and the things of God, it will be counterproductive.
Some people have become
too familiar with God's Word, the church, the sacraments and God's ministers
that they no longer give them any regard.
QUESTION:
Do you think you know God enough to be overfamiliar with Him?
PRAYER:
Help me to reverence You and honor Your church, in Christ's name. Amen.

Remain
Blessed
