TEXT:
1 TIMOTHY 3:8 – 13
8.
Deacons likewise must be men worthy of respect [honorable, financially ethical,
of good character], not double-tongued [speakers of half-truths], not addicted
to wine, not greedy for dishonest gain,
9.
but upholding and fully understanding the mystery [that is, the true doctrine]
of the [Christian] faith with a clear conscience [resulting from behavior
consistent with spiritual maturity].
10.
These men must first be tested; then if they are found to be blameless and
beyond reproach [in their Christian lives], let them serve as deacons.
11.
Women must likewise be worthy of respect, not malicious gossips, but
self-controlled, [thoroughly] trustworthy in all things.
12.
Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children
and their own households.
13.
For those who have served well as deacons gain a high standing [having a good
reputation among the congregation], and great confidence in the faith which is
[founded on and centered] in Christ Jesus.
(Amplified Version Holy Bible)
TOPIC:
ASK FOR THE GRACE TO SERVE IN HUMILITY
Similarly,
today, those who serve in assisting church leaders as deacons are required to
be qualified spiritually, likewise their wives. Deacons' work is menial and
unattractive and so requires great humility on the part of those called to
serve in this capacity.
When
we are called to serve in a lowly position (away from the lime light), doing
what may not even be considered great spiritual work, it is a test of our
spiritual maturity. Those who excel in undertaking such tasks usually purge
themselves of harbouring wrong motives, especially pride, for serving the Lord.
Consequently,
they are not only able to build confidence in the sincerity of their faith,
they would be greatly rewarded in eternity when our works of service for the
Lord are finally tested (see 1 Corinthians 3:10-15, 4:5). Ask for the grace to
serve the Lord in great humility.
QUESTION: What
has God called you to do?
PRAYER: Oh
God, grant me the grace to serve You in great humility, in Jesus name. Amen.
Remain
Blessed
