International Version (NIV) Holy Bible.
Marriage was not
designed for both to treat their partner like tissue paper, used and dump
phenomenon. It is bond that must not be broken. The two partners are bound to
each other unless death do them part.
In this blog post, I
will go through some Bible verses that talked about marriage and the Biblical
advice on divorce which no believers will like to experience that. First of
all, each believer is encouraged to pray for life partner to avoid divorce,
which God said, He hate divorce.
Teaching
on Marriage
1. Genesis 2:18, 21-25
Verse 18 – The LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will
make a helper suitable for him.’
Verse 21 – So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and
while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the
place with flesh.
Verse 22 – Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of
the man, and he brought her to the man.
Verse 23 – The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh; she shall be called ”woman”, for she was taken out of man.’
Verse 24 – That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to
his wife, and they become one flesh.
Verse 25 – Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
2. Matthew 19:4-5
Verse 4 – Haven’t you read, he replied, ‘that at the beginning the
Creator “made them male and female,”
Verse 5 – and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and
mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”?
Verse 6 – So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God
has joined together, let no one separate.’
3. Mark 10:6-9
Verse 6 – ‘But at the beginning of creation God “made them male and
female”.
Verse 7 - “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be
united to his wife,
Verse 8 – and the two will become one flesh.” So they are no longer two,
but one flesh.
Verse 9 - Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.’
4. 1 Corinthians 7:1-5, 9
Verse 1 – Now for the matters you wrote about: ‘It is good for a man not
to have sexual relations with a woman.’
Verse 2 – But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have
sexual relations with his wife, and each woman with her husband.
Verse 3 – The husband should fulfil his marital duty to his wife, and
likewise the wife to her husband.
Verse 4 – The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields
it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his
own body but yields it to his wife.
Verse 5 – Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and
for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together
again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
Verse 9 – But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for
it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
5. Ephesians 5:22-33
Verse 22 – Wives, submit yourselves to your own husband as you do to the
Lord.
Verse 23 – For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head
of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
Verse 24 – Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should
submit to their husbands in everything.
Verse 25 – Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and
gave himself up for her
Verse 26 – to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water
through the word,
Verse 27 – and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without
stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
Verse 28 – In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their
own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Verse 29 – After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and
care for their body, just as Christ does the church –
Verse 30 – for we are the members of his body.
Verse 31 – ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be
united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’
Verse 32 – This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and
the church.
Verse 33 – However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves
himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Teaching
on Divorce
1. Deuteronomy 24:1-4
Verse 1 – If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because
he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of
divorce, gives to her and sends her from his house,
Verse 2 – and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of
another man,
Verse 3 – and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate
of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if she dies,
Verse 4 – then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to
marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the
eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving
you as an inheritance.
2. Matthew 5:31-32
Verse 31 – ‘It has been said, “Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.”
Verse 32 – But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for
sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a
divorced woman commits adultery.
3. Matthew 19:6-9
Verse 6 – So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God
has joined together, let no one separate.
Verse 7 – ‘Why then,’ they asked, ‘did Moses command that a man that a
man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?’
The above verse is a
referenced of Deuteronomy 24:1. But Jesus cleared the air about that, so many
people misinterprets the verse by doing what is not godly. Christians
especially believers in Christ is not an option to involve in divorce. We
should always pray to God to give us the grace to have a Christian home where
both husband and wife will themselves as one not two and also to see their body
as one. In that case, you cannot hurt your own body.
Verse 8 – Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives
because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning’
Verse 9 – I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual
immorality, and marries another woman commit adultery.
4. Mark 10:2-5, 9-12
Verse 2 – Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, ‘Is it lawful for
a man to divorce his wife?’
Verse 3 – ‘What did Moses command you?’ he replied.
Verse 4 – They said, ‘Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of
divorce and send her away.’
Verse 5 – ‘It was because your hearts were hard that Moses you this law,’
Jesus replied.
Verse 9 – Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
Verse 10 – When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about
this.
Verse 11 – He answered, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another
woman commits adultery against her.’
Verse 12 – And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she
commits adultery.
5. Luke 16:18 – ‘Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits
adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.’
6. 1 Corinthians 7:10-16
Verse 10 – To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): a
wife must not separate from her husband.
Verse 11 – But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
Verse 12 – To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a
wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
Verse 13 – And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is
willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.
Verse 14 – For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified though his
wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing
husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
Verse 15 – But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the
sister is not bound such in such circumstances; God has called us to live in
peace.
Verse 16 – How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or,
how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
