TEXT: MATTHEW 23:23–24
TOPIC: LIVING TO PLEASE GOD
MATTHEW 23:23-24 NIV
23: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees,
you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you
have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and
faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the
former.
24: You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but
swallow a camel.
LIVING TO PLEASE GOD
In these verses, Jesus highlights the tragic irony
of religious leaders who meticulously observe minor laws while ignoring the
heart of God’s commands.
Tithing spices, while technically correct, became a
substitute for practicing justice, mercy, and faithfulness—principles that
reflect God’s character.
Jesus does not condemn careful obedience but warns
against a superficial faith that neglects deeper spiritual truths.
It is possible to appear devout while missing the
essence of righteousness.
This passage prompts us to examine our spiritual
priorities.
Are we more concerned with being seen as religious,
or are we truly living out God’s heart?
True faith is expressed through compassion,
fairness, and steadfast love.
Let us strive for a faith that transforms us from
the inside out rather than settling for mere external conformity.
QUESTION: Are you more concerned with being seen as
religious, or are you truly living out God’s heart?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to practice justice, extend
mercy, and walk faithfully with You. May my worship be sincere, and my actions
reflect your heart. Amen.
