TEXT:
Genesis 32:24-30
24:
So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.
25:
When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of
Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
26:
Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will
not let you go unless you bless me.”
27:
The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.
28:
Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you
have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29:
Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my
name?” Then he blessed him there.
30:
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to
face, and yet my life was spared.”

TOPIC:
AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE DIVINE (I)
The
American wrestler, Terry Eugene Bollea, aka Hulk Hogan, became popular for
wrestling in the 1980s and 1990s.
Today's
text is about about between Jacob and a 'man' whom we later realise is actually
God.
The
encounter results in a name change and Israel is blessed. But where does Jacob
get the audacity to wrestle God? He even dares to ask God's name - how?
A
level of tenacity and resilience is required in one's walk with God to have a
breakthrough.
Given
the fact that Jacob is Tuning away from his brother, Esau, this encounter is
enough to weaken him. But no!
When
the opportunity presents itself, Jacob grabs it without allowing his past guilt
and failure discourage him.
Hulk
Hogan always began each match by tearing his shirt - meaning that in his next
match, he will have to get a new one.
Every
engagement with God is a fresh start. Don't let your past match record, whether
a win or a loss, affect your next encounter in life!
QUESTION:
Have you ever encountered God?
PRAYER:
Father, let me have an encounter with You. I desire it desperately, in Jesus
name. Amen.
Remain
Blessed
