Nourishing the Soul: Daily Devotions for Inner Peace

TEXT: Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

11. I returned and saw under the sun that-The race is not to the swift, Not the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.

12. For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, Like birds caught in a snare, So the sons of men are snared in an evil time, When it falls suddenly upon them.

13. This wisdom I have also seen under the sun, and it seemed great to me:

14. There was a little city with few men in it, besieged it, and built great snares around it.

15. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man.

16. Then I said: “Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, And his words are not heard.

17. Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard. Rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.

18. Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good.”

TOPIC: WISDOM IN A FAST AND DIGITAL GENERATION

The computer revolution has brought with it so much speed and efficiency in the amount of data that can be processed. Every facet of life is digitally fast.

Consequently, family ties and traditions are eroding and falling apart. But today’s devotion cautions us: the race is not for the swift; food does not come to the wise; wealth does not come to the brilliant; and favour does not come to the learned.

These assertions are a star, contradiction to what this digital, fast-moving, generation represents.

Our text draws our attention to wisdom, a stabilizer in this fast, uncontrollable generation. We need to go back and seek wisdom because it is better than weapons of war (v. 18).

We celebrate some of the ingenuity that technology has brought to us. Wisdom, however, demands that God’s Word and His Spirit guide us in our consumption of technology.

You ask how? Well, any technology that misrepresents God and our knowledge of Him should be avoided. It is good to go fast, but is better to arrive safely!

QUESTION: How much wisdom do you apply while consuming technology?

PRAYER: Thank You, dear Lord, for technology. Help me to apply wisdom in using it, in Jesus name. Amen.
