TEXT:
John 8:1-11
1.
while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2.
Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him
and he sat down and began to teach them.
3.
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery;
and making her stand before all of them,
4.
they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing
adultery.
5.
Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
6.
They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring
against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.
7.
When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let
anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8.
And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
9.
When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and
Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.
10.
Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one
condemned you?”
11.
She said, “No one, sir.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your
way, and from now on do not sin again.”

TOPIC:
JESUS, THE LIGHT AND THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE
Man is always quick to
judge another caught in sin, especially when it is shameful and legally
condemnable.
Jesus was still busy
teaching in the temple courts and showing them the light from God’s word. Trying
to justify their claim of knowing the Law of Moses very well, they brought out
a woman caught in adultery for judgment (vs. 1-3).
They were attempting to
trap Jesus using Moses’ Law. Making the woman stand in public without the man
with whom she committed the sin is a proof of bias and lack of light in them (vs.
4-6).
After citing the Law of
Moses, they asked for Jesus’ opinion on the matter. Knowing the thoughts of
men, Jesus delayed to giving an answer, allowing them to search their
consciences, for no man is without sin. Then he declared, “If anyone of you is
without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her” (v. 7).
The question pricked
their hearts and they left the public court one after the other until only the
woman and Jesus remained. The woman’s sin was like a ‘speck’ compared to the
logs in the Pharisees’ eyes (Matthew 7:3-5: cp. Romans 14:4, 13; 1 Corinthians
4:5; James 4:12) and Jesus used this to illustrate the holier than thou
attitude of men. Jesus gave the woman another chance to mend her way, saying, “Neither
do I condemn you, but go and sin no more” (v. 11).
QUESTION:
Who judges righteously on this side of heaven apart from Jesus?
PRAYER:
Let the light of your words help me stay with You only as the righteous judge
of the earth, in Jesus name, Amen.
Remain
Blessed
