TEXT: 1
Corinthians 11:17-22
17.
While writing about these things, let me tell you what I think. Nothing good is
coming from your meeting together.
18. First
of all, I hear that when you meet together in the church you are divided into
groups and you argue. I almost believe this is true.
19. For
there must be different groups among you. In that way, those who are right will
be seen from those who are wrong.
20.
When you gather together for your meetings, it is not to eat the Lord’s supper.
21.
Each one is in a hurry to eat his own food first. He does not wait for others. In
this way, one does not get enough food and drink. Others get too and get drunk.
22. You
have your own homes to eat and drink in. or do you hate the church of God and
shame those who are poor? What am I to say to you? No! I cannot say you are
right in this.

Life Version Holy Bible)
TOPIC: PROPER
AND IMPROPER CONDUCT DURING COMMUNION (I)
Celebrating the Lord’s
Supper is one of the ordinances Jesus commanded the Church to do in remembrance
of His sacrifice for man’s salvation and proclaiming His coming back (1
Corinthians 11:26). It was a time of fellowship, meal and worship. Members came
with their meals to share with others who might not have. They were expected to
wait for others and share evenly. But there came a time of disorderliness in
the conduct of sharing the communion bread and wine.
Paul cautioned that they
were not doing the right thing (vs. 17-19). If such was happening, then
heresies wouldn’t be far from a divided assembly which would hinder the
fellowship that was to follow. It wasn’t the kind of small bread we share today
but big loaves from which each took a piece and passed to others. In the
process, it appeared that some took more while others had none at all (vs. 21,
22). Thus, Paul chided the church to behave better. How often are loaves feasts
and communion shared in our churches today and how has this been done?
QUESTION: Can
we truly say that our love feast days are properly handled as the communion of
the Saints?
PRAYER: Let
the true spirit of Christ’s love manifest in our conduct at His table, in Jesus
name, Amen.
Remain
Blessed
