There are so things happening around the world, who knows whether some only needs our prayers to be able to get out of their trauma, while others needs our help in one way or the other to strengthen their faith.

So I see it challenging to showcase some verse that teaches about intercessory prayer.

All the Bible Books written and quotes here are in New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

1. Genesis 18:16-33

Abraham tried to intercede for Sodom and Gomorrah after it was revealed to him what will soon befall them, but do not avail. Because there’s no one that is righteous there except Lot and his household.

Verse 16. Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way.

Verse 17. The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,

Verse 18. Seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Verse 19. No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

Verse 20. Then the Lord said, “How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how they grave their sin!

Verse 21. I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know.”

Verse 22. So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the Lord.

Verse 23. Then Abraham came near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

Verse 24. Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it?

Verse 25. Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just?”

Verse 26. And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in a city, I will forgive the whole place for their sake.”

Verse 27. Abraham answered, “Let me take it upon myself and speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

Verse 28. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

Verse 29. Again he spoke to him, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.”

Verse 30. Then he said, “Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if thirty are found there.”

Verse 31. He said, “Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.”

Verse 32. Then he said, “Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of the ten I will not destroy it.”

Verse 33. And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

2. Nehemiah 1

This Chapter showcase how Nehemiah intercede for his people Israel after hearing what they are passing through.

Verse 1. The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. In the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in Susa the capital,

Verse 2. One of my brothers, Hanani, came with certain men from Judah; and I asked them about the Jews that survived, those who has escaped the captivity, and about Jerusalem.

Verse 3. They replied, “The survivors there in the province who escaped captivity are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire.”

Verse 4. When I heard these words I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

Verse 5. I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments;

Verse 6. let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Both I and my family have sinned.

Verse 7. We have offended you deeply, failing to keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances that you commanded your servant Moses.

Verse 8. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, “If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples;

Verse 9. but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring to the place at which I have chosen to establish my name.’

Verse 10. They are your servants and your people, who you redeemed by your great power and your strong hand.

Verse 11. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man!” At the time, I was cupbearer to the king.

3. Job 1:5

Job always pray to God interceding for his children after every feast whether they might have sin against God. We also can do same.

Verse 5. And when the feast days had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offering according to the number of them all; for Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” This is what Job always did.

4. Jeremiah 29:7

This is an individual prayer. You have to intercede for the city that you are living in.

Verse 7. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

5. Philippians 1:19

This verse motivate us to pray for those facing persecution because of the name of Jesus. They are in captivity and those facing different trials.

6. Hebrews 4:16

This verse also encourage us to seek the face of God in time of need. Especially those that are in need of one thing or the other, we have to pray for God to meet them at the point of their need.

Verse 16. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

7. 1 John 5:14-15

We have to pray for ourselves and others so that we should not be a slave to sin. We can also pray so that God will help us not to be a source of someone to falling into sin. Because he promised to hears us.

Verse 14. And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Verse 15. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him.
