Unshakable Peace: Finding Calm in God’s Word

SUNDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2024

TEXT: MATTHEW 5:38-42

38: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’

39: But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

40: And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

41: If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

42: Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

(New International Version Holy Bible)

TOPIC: RESPONDING TO HARSH TREATMENT

Life is full of different experiences, some of which put you in impossible situations you never imagined. Christians respond to provocations in different ways and have various means of dealing with them.

Jesus gave some nuggets to help us respond to provocations as we journey on this side of eternity. Instead of retaliating, He expects us to be calm and even allow ourselves to be cheated by the evil person.

He advises us to follow the path of peace up to the end of the situation. This is obviously not what the society in which we live ascribes to.

It is more appealing to repay evil with evil which makes us feel better for "fighting for our rights. But doing this will certainly lead to more chaos and make people miss the blessings of God.

QUESTION: How do you respond to those who provoke you?

PRAYER: Help me, dear Lord, to remember Your instructions whenever I am provoked. Make me respond in a way that glorifies You, in Jesus name. Amen.
