TEXT: 1 Corinthians 10:14-22

14. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

15. I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say.

16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

17. For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

18. Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

19. What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything?

20. Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.

21. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

22. Or do we provoke the Lord of jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

(New King James Version Holy Bible)

TOPIC: DON’T ASSOCIATE WITH IDOLATRY

Paul continued his admonishing on how to run the race by instructing the Corinthian believers to steer clear of idolatry.

Due to the background they were coming from before embracing the gospel of salvation in Christ, the new believers must flee, that is, run away from every appearance of idolatry.

Read vs. 14-18 and not reject the example of the communion of the body of Christ. So, believers must not be found in any assembly where fellowship with demons or strange gods takes place.

What fellowship have believers in Christ with cultic practices or anything similar? Paul says, “When anyone eats a meal in a building where there is an idol, he has fellowship with the demons of that place.”

As believers, we owe loyalty to the Lord and to one another because we drink from His cup at the communion table. Secret society members are loyal to one another because at initiation, they drink the same ceremony or sacrifice.

“Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy?” (vs. 22). God’s punishment awaits those associating with idolatry in any form, therefore flee from it!

QUESTION: Who are your associates and what consequences might this union bring upon you?

PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me grace to dissociate myself from any appearance of idolatry in my daily living, in Jesus name, Amen.
